NEON Journalist - Contract position
The Human Rights Commission is looking to contract a Wellington-based journalist to write the NEON (National Equal Opportunities Network) newsletter.
The Human Rights Commission advocates and promotes respect for, and an understanding and appreciation of, human rights. It encourages the maintenance and development of harmonious relations in New Zealand, and operates a dispute resolution service.
The Commission would like to contract a capable and experienced freelance journalist interested in Equal Employment Opportunities to write high quality content for the National Equal Opportunities Network (NEON) website in consultation with the EEO Commissioner and the EEO Trust.
Deliverables would be:
- an online monthly newsletter (approx 40-60 hours work)
- newsletter to be from 4 to 8 A4 pages long
- approximately 70% of stories would require interviews
- a meeting with Commission personnel to establish content and liaison after newsletter is written (and before publication) in order to get sign-off.
The ideal person would have:
- experience in web-based journalism
- interviewing skills
- ability to write to deadlines
- ability to undertake agreed editorial protocols with news sources

Senior Communications Adviser
Victoria University is looking for a Senior Communications Adviser to join its Communications team.
Communications planning and issues management will be part of your skill set and you will be expected to provide communications advice to various parts of the University while managing competing expectations.
You will be unflappable, an excellent writer, have an eye for detail and understand the current news environment. Your role will include leading a team of writers three times a year to produce the University’s magazine Victorious which has a readership of more than 45,000 alumni. You will also contribute in the areas of internal communications and speech writing.
You will be able to form effective working relationships across the University and with media.
Most importantly you must be as passionate about communications as we are.
Our team has a strong focus on learning, new experiences and professional development. You will undertake a range of communications activities and be second in charge to the Communications Manager.
We offer an interesting, fast-paced and challenging working environment and you will be part of a professional and supportive team.
The Communications team is part of the wider Communications and Marketing group which comprises Marketing, Events, Alumni and Online Services. The group communicates with over 2,000 staff, 22,000 students and a diverse range of external stakeholders.
Ideally you will have three to five years experience in another communications role and have a tertiary qualification. You must be eligible to work in NZ to apply for this role.

Senior Advisor, Communications Strategy

Communications Advisor
Mayor's Office – Wellington
The Mayor’s Office is looking for an experienced Communications Advisor to join our busy team.
The role is responsible for researching and writing the Mayor’s speeches and for managing her interaction with the media.
The Communications Advisor also provides issues management and general communications advice to the Mayor and writes presentations and other communication materials.
The role would suit someone who loves to write, writes with flair and who has excellent relationship management skills; someone who is confident, energetic, passionate about Wellington and who likes to keep busy.
The successful candidate will be able to multi-task, work to deadlines and have a keen interest in current affairs. You will be someone who can take complex material and present it in simple language, be an advocate of Plain English and appreciate the elements of what makes a great speech.
We are looking for someone with experience in communications or PR, and preferably someone who has worked in journalism or with the media before.
