Thursday 30 May

David Wansbrough, Director Resource Policy at the Ministry for Primary Industries, is going to share the presentation he gave to the Science Communicators conference earlier this year. The theme of the conference was Disasters – Communicating in the Crisis and Aftermath.

The conference sessions covered risk communication in relation to the threat of disasters, case studies of effective science communication during disasters, communicating science as a disaster is still unfolding, and the changes in public understanding and expectations of science and communication.

David has been a public servant for 15 years and has managed to spend most of that time involved in highly polarised topics – genetically modified food, spraying Auckland with pesticide, immunisation, and animal welfare.

David was the National Manager of Immunisation in the Ministry of Health for three years until early 2012, including through the H1N1 “swine flu” pandemic in 2009-10. Before that he spent seven years at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry working on biotechnology and biosecurity policy.

Before moving to Wellington, David lived in Canberra and worked in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. David has degrees in Science, Science Communication, and Public Policy and is passionate about good communication and plain English.
